Edge Loopback¶
The Edge Loopback feature offers a way to define a local IP address for the flexiEdge, which can be routed and accessed from other edges or through OSPF (Open Shortest Path First). This feature is helpful for reaching the device through a local loopback and is independent to the availability of the LAN or WAN interfaces.
Overview¶
The Edge Loopback feature is designed to give each edge or gateway an alternative IP address that is separate from the LAN subnet it belongs to. This is particularly useful in cases where:
Several edges exist within the same LAN and share the same subnet.
It is important for each edge to have its own unique address for specific purposes, such as management or direct communication.
There is a need to avoid IP conflicts within the LAN by defining a different access range for each edge.
By using the Edge Loopback feature, a distinct access IP can be assigned to each edge, ensuring smooth and consistent routing between edges and avoiding potential issues with overlapping address ranges.
Use Case¶
When direct access to flexiEdge is required, when the LAN interfae is down. The Edge Loopback feature solves this problem by allowing the assignment of a unique loopback IP to each edge which is always up.
This allows for the following:
Each edge can be accessed through its dedicated loopback IP, which is separate from the main LAN IP.
This alternative IP can be used for communication between edges or within OSPF.
Potential conflicts in IP addresses are eliminated, improving network reliability.
Configuration¶
To configure the Edge Loopback feature, navigate to the settings of the device on which the feature will be deployed. From the Interfaces tab, click on Actions button.
From the drop down, click on Add Edge Loopback.
Enter an IP for this flexiEdge device, make sure it has a unique IP set. When OSPF is used for routing, the loopback IP is included propagated and can be reached by other edges. After entering the IP, click Add.
Review the newly added Edge Loopback IP now visible from the interfaces page. Click Update device to confirm the change.
That’s it, the Edge Loopack is configured, verify the loopback IP is reachable from other parts of the network, ensuring proper connectivity between edges or other devices.
